Publishing illusion
‘Publishing, or perhaps I ought to say, Book-Publishing, is quite different from what most people apparently suppose. The young man who regards it as a pleasantly dilettante occupation suitable for somebody who does not know what he wants to do but likes books, is under an illusion.’
Stanley Unwin, The Truth about Publishing, 1960 edition.
Book publishing is a complex business and Stanley Unwin was right to point to the illusion that most people hold. This complexity will be compounded by the inevitable expansion in the availability of digital content through many different channels, not just Google.
According to Forrester Research, the growth of e-books and e-book reader devices will be slower than expected, but sales of custom- printed trade books and digitized textbooks should be strong.
The researcher expects digital delivery of custom-printed books, textbooks and e-books to reach $7.8 billion in five years, accounting for 17.5% of the publishing industry, but only about $251 million will be from e-books read on e-book reading devices.
To handle this complexity and volume growth requires the right foundation on which to build robust, scalable and flexible solutions to support and streamline the business processes that go to make up the world of book publishing.
